SHILLONG, Aug 29: Adviser to the Education department, HM Shangpliang on Tuesday said the government plans to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 at the secondary and higher secondary levels too.
“The implementation should have started from the school level. We have already begun the exercise to implement the new policy by constituting the Education Commission. Other committees, like one for textbooks, are in the pipeline,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a function.
He said the Textbook Review Committee would submit its suggestions and recommendations to the government for a new syllabus and new curriculum with a focus on local content.
“We are also exercising our minds to bring in NCERT books through the MBoSE,” Shangpliang said.
Stating that the government is taking baby steps to implement the NEP at the school level, he said many things need to be done before the implementation.
“We have to upgrade our infrastructure and employ more teachers,” he said.
He, however, said the NEP has already started at the college level.
When reminded of the opposition of the NEHUTA and MCTA to the decision of NEHU to implement the NEP from the current academic session, Shangpliang said they would like to leave it to the wisdom of the university. “It is for the vice-chancellor to address any issue with the MCTA,” he said.
Asked if the state government should step in since education falls under the concurrent list, he said Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma have made it very clear that the NEP would be introduced in the state.
“Let us wait for the outcome of the talks between the VC and the members of the MCTA,” Shangpliang said.
