HNYM holds demonstration after cops stop them from marching to Secretariat

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG, Aug 31: A prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC went for a toss on Thursday when a large number of Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) activists took out a rally and demonstrated near the Civil Hospital junction demanding regulation of the employment policy.
The HNYM’s march towards the Secretariat was foiled due to the presence of a large posse of policemen, following which they gathered and demonstrated, shouting slogans and displaying placards, at Mot U Kiang Nangbah opposite the civil hospital.
HNYM president Louis Dohtdong said they had been demanding an employment policy since July 2022 but despite a year no progress has been made.
He informed the gathering that a meeting has been scheduled with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on September 4.
Referring to states like Punjab and Maharashtra, Dohtdong demanded 80% job reservation in the private sector for tribals.
He said the state government has embarked on a lot of entrepreneurial programmes but these only work for the rich or those who have close ties with the higher ups while the poor and needy unemployed youth are denied the benefits.
The demonstration ended on a peaceful note as police later escorted them away from the spot.
