The development comes after the High Court of Meghalaya passed a series of orders directing the state government to formulate comprehensive guidelines for conservation and protection of waterbodies in the state.
The government had banned any form of encroachment in an around waterbodies. It also bans setting up of any industry or expansion of existing industries near waterbodies. There will also be a ban on dumping of hazardous substances, solid and bio-medical waste and discharge of untreated wastes and effluents from industries, cities, towns and villages into waterbodies.
