Shillong, Sep 7: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) on Thursday said it wants the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) to field a common candidate in the Shillong seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
“We understand that it will be difficult to win the seat if we all field our own candidate. I am sure we will have a better chance if we can set up a common candidate,” HSPDP president, KP Pangniang said.
He said the matter needs to be discussed formally in the RDA since the United Democratic Party (UDP), which is the other constituent of the RDA, will have to endorse this idea. He said the HSPDP will search for a candidate in case there is no consensus on the issue.
Meanwhile, Pangniang said the party will go it alone in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections.
“We will not have any kind of pre-poll alliance with the UDP in KHADC and JHADC elections,” Pangniang said.
He said the UDP and the HSPDP are yet to discuss together the issue of the election of new office bearers of RDA. He, however, said UDP president, Metbah Lyngdoh will continue as the RDA chairman while he will continue as its co-chairman.
“We need to decide only on the post of general secretary,” he added.
