LONDON, Sep 16: Liverpool scored two late goals on Saturday to secure a come-from-behind 3-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.
Trailing 1-0 at half-time to a Hwang Hee-Chan goal at Molineux, the Merseyside team fired back through Cody Gakpo and Andy Robertson before an own goal by Hugo Bueno in time added on.
Liverpool is unbeaten after five games this season and moved to the top of the table above defending champion Manchester City, which plays later in the day.
It has been an impressive start for Jurgen Klopp’s team, which missed out on qualification to the UEFA Champions League last season for the first time since 2016.
It was Liverpool’s fourth win in a row after drawing with Chelsea in its opening game of the campaign.
But, the game didn’t go to plan from the start with Hwang opening the scoring in the seventh minute to give the home side a lead it kept until the break.
Gakpo evened the score 10 minutes into the second half for his first Liverpool goal of the season.
Robertson fired Liverpool in front in the 85th minute and Bueno’s own goal ended all hope of a Wolverhampton comeback in the 91st minute.
City come from behind to beat West Ham 3-1
Manchester City needed two late goals to overcome resistance from West Ham and seal a 3-1 win at the London Stadium to stay top of the Premier League on Saturday.
Bernardo Silva gave the champions the lead for the first time 14 minutes from the end after latching onto a superb pass from Julian Alvarez, before Erling Haaland completed the job with a well-taken finish as West Ham pressed for an equalizer.
Earlier, James Ward-Prowse had given David Moyes’ side a first-half lead that had the Hammers on course to overtake City at the top of the table, heading home from Vladimir Coufal’s cross for his second goal since joining in the summer.
Jeremy Doku, making just his second start, levelled with an expertly taken individual effort seconds after halftime, as Manchester City took charge of a difficult situation to send the hosts to their first defeat of the season and maintain their own perfect start.
Brighton stun Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford
Loud jeers rang around Old Trafford on Saturday as Manchester United fans reacted angrily to manager Erik ten Hag’s decision to take off new signing Rasmus Hojlund in a 3-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.
United was trailing 2-0 when Hojlund, an $82 million signing from Atalanta, was replaced by substitute Anthony Martial in the 64th minute.
Boos filled the air when the Denmark forward’s number came up on the electronic board and he started to jog to the touchline.
Hojlund, making his first start for his new club and his first appearance in front of its home fans, had already seen a first-half goal ruled out by VAR.
But with United needing to get back into the game after going behind to strikes from Danny Welbeck and Pascal Gross, Ten Hag decided to withdraw him in a bid to mount a comeback.
Hojlund missed the start of the season while recovering from injury and that might have been a reason for his substitution. But the crowd appeared unimpressed and vociferously made its feelings known before showing their appreciation for the striker’s efforts by applauding him as he left the field.
To make matters worse for United, the change didn’t have the desired effect as visitors Brighton extended its lead soon after when its own substitute Joao Pedro made it 3-0 in the 71st minute to add to a troubled start to the season for Manchester United’s Dutch manager. (AP)
