Muzaffarnagar riots: Eight acquitted
Muzaffarnagar (UP), Oct 1: A local court has acquitted eight people accused of looting and arson during the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots due to lack of evidence. Additional District and Sessions Judge Alka Bharti issued the order acquitting Azadpal, Jitender, Parul, Vikas, Gaurav, Kuldeep, Sanjay and Mithlesh on Saturday. The court said the prosecution failed to prove the charges. According to defence counsel Pradeep Kumar Malik, an FIR was registered by Akram on September 8, 2013, in which he alleged that rioters entered his house in lisadh village under the Phugana police station, committed loot and set it on fire. A Special Investigation Team had filed a charge sheet against nine accused in the case. During the pendency of the case, accused Rishipal died in 2016. Over 60 people were killed and more than thousands displaced during the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013. (PTI)
Cocaine worth Rs 300 crore seized in J-K
Banihal/Jammu, Oct 1: Police have recovered 30 kg of cocaine worth Rs 300 crore in international market from a vehicle in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, a senior police officer said on Sunday, claiming to have busted a narco-terror module. According to the official, two Punjab residents were arrested following the recovery of one of the biggest narcotic haul this year from Banihal area along Jammu-Srinagar national highway. Earlier, the recovered narcotics was believed to be heroin but after investigation it turned out to be cocaine. “At about 10.30 pm on Saturday, Ramban police led by Senior Superintendent of Police, Mohita Sharma intercepted one vehicle at Railway Chowk Banihal coming from Kashmir towards Jammu and recovered about 30 kg cocaine, having an approximate value of Rs 300 crore in international black market and apprehended two persons,” Additional DGP, Jammu zone, Mukesh Singh said. He said the recovery resulted in the busting of a narco-terror module. A case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act was registered. (PTI)
