SHILLONG, Oct 17: Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister AL Hek felt that active participation in farming especially in rural areas can mitigate shortage of livestock in the state.
As Meghalaya is largely dependent on other states for supply of livestock into the state, the minister informed that the state government has introduced different mission to overcome the shortage.
“To mitigate the dependence, the government has introduced initiatives like the National Livestock Mission and Meghalaya Piggery Mission. Under these schemes, subsidies of 50 pc and 30 pc are offered, encouraging individuals, NGOs, and societies to venture into poultry and piggery farming,’ he said.
The minister urged the people, particularly in rural areas to participate in schemes and engage in poultry and piggery farming. He stressed the need for active participation from the people, highlighting that their engagement in poultry, fishery, and piggery sectors is crucial for self-sustainability and to meet the demand for these vital resources.
Despite existing missions such as the Aquaculture Mission and Piggery Mission being in operation for several years, shortages persist.
He urged individuals and organisations to start venturing and contributing to resolve persistent shortages in the sector.
