TURA, Oct 31: Social activist from Tura Cherian Momin has written to NEHU Vice Chancellor, Prof PS Sukhla suggesting certain measures to be taken with regard to its administration especially, the communication and implementation of anti-ragging initiatives at the campus.
“It has come to my attention that NEHU Tura Campus has not received the vital Anti Ragging Initiatives Notification, F.NO.24-40/DSW/2023-442, dated 24 August 2023. This lapse in communication has significantly impacted the awareness and preparedness of the Campus Director Tura and Heads of Departments (HODs) regarding a regrettable incident that occurred on October 8, 2023. The incident involved an MBA student from the Department of Agri Business Management who was subjected to ragging inside the Arabella Boys’ Hostel at NEHU in Chasingre,” Momin said, in his letter.
Pointing out that the undisciplined and heinous incident not only brought great shame to the student community but also raises serious concerns about the overall safety and well-being of the students, Momin added, “In adherence to the Judgement of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India dated 08.05.2019 and the UGC’s notification on ‘Regulation in Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions, 2009,’ it is imperative that the University ensures the dissemination of such crucial information to all its campuses promptly”.
Momin also highlighted the urgent need to gear up the University’s preparedness to prevent nuisances like ragging in various departments, hostels, and other areas. While the university has implemented an Anti-Ragging Committee and Anti-Ragging Squad, it is equally important to strengthen measures at the departmental level, he added.
Momin further suggested certain actions to be taken to rectify the prevailing situation. This include the immediate dissemination of the anti-ragging initiatives Notification, enhanced preparedness to gear up the University to prevent incidents of ragging as per the SC regulation, various departmental programmes like encouraging departments to actively monitor Fresher’s programs, introducing a ‘Teacher Mentor’ system and the constitution of a ‘Departmental Anti-Ragging Cell,’ ensuring the involvement of faculty, Research Scholars, and senior students.
