Tura observes Int’l Day of Persons with Disabilities

Tura, Dec 2: International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observe a day ahead at Monfort Centre for Education, Danakgre here on Saturday.
The programme was organised by district social welfare office, West Garo Hills in collaboration with DLSA and Monfort Centre for Education, Tura on the theme ‘United in Action to Rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities’.
The day witnessed enthusiastic participation of the attendees. The physically challenged students of Monfort Centre of Education, Tura captivated the audience with their performance of songs and dances.
A medical team from District Medical & Health Office, Tura assisted in health check up of the persons with disabilities during the programme.
Addressing the gathering as chief guest, District Medical and Health Officer, Tura Dr. B Debbarma informed that the day is dedicated to promote the rights and well being of the persons with disabilities. He further highlighted the importance of inclusivity, accessibility and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities, while also celebrating their achievements and contributions to the society and mentioned that the Government of India along with the state government provides various financial assistance under different schemes for their benefit.
District Social Welfare Officer, Tura Silje A Sangma highlighted that the day is observed to raise awareness about the equal opportunities to be given to persons with disabilities so that they can participate equally and effectively in society without any barriers.
Mentioning the theme of disability day, she said that everyone should work together to make the world better for people with disabilities. Further, she also informed that the persons with disabilities should obtain disability certificate, Aadhar number and other necessary documents for availing various financial aid provided by the government.
