SHILLONG, Dec 9: The NPP and the VPP have taken a lead in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls due next year by declaring the names of their candidates but the BJP seems to be taking it easy, at least for now.
Meghalaya BJP leaders have, so far, remained non committal on the names of candidates who have applied for the party ticket for the Shillong and Tura seats. Senior BJP leader and Cabinet minister, AL Hek had on more than one occasion projected himself as a potential candidate from Shillong but recently he pushed forward the idea of fielding women candidates from both seats provided suitable candidates were available.
Reacting to the “calm” in the state BJP camp, party spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said, “The central leadership has not asked for the names and it is probably because of the recent Assembly elections in five states. We expect something will come out from the national leaders soon. Let us wait till then.”
When reminded that BJP leader and South Shillong legislator, Sanbor Shullai had earlier stated that unlike the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, this time the candidates should be given at least six months to work on the ground, Kharkrang said, “I do agree with  that. Ample time should be given and this is not just for Meghalaya but for all other states. The candidate needs time to prepare and go out for canvassing. This issue will definitely be taken up by the central leadership.”
Replying to a query on how the BJP will ensure good performance in the rural constituencies, he said, “As workers of the party, we will have to really work hard though a lot of people in the villages also they know about the developmental schemes launched by the central government. We need to go the extra mile.”
He also mentioned that there would be a greater inflow of schemes into Meghalaya if the BJP wins the upcoming elections.
