Shillong, December 14: In response to a major security lapse in Parliament, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has taken action by suspending eight security personnel. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, involved two individuals leaping into the Lower House from the visitors’ gallery and releasing yellow smoke canisters.
As per India Today, the suspended personnel were stationed at critical access points, including the entry gate and the Parliament House Entry Area. This unprecedented security breach allowed a group of intruders to gain access to the Lok Sabha during the ongoing Zero Hour.
One person was observed leaping over the benches, while another dangled from the visitors’ gallery. The intruders released colored smoke canisters and engaged in disruptive sloganeering, impacting the session both inside and outside the Parliament premises.
MPs and security personnel successfully overpowered Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D, the individuals who had jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber. They were subsequently handed over to the police. Additionally, Amol Shinde and Neelam were detained for protesting outside the Parliament building.
In the aftermath of the security breach, the police have detained a total of five accused, while a sixth suspect remains at large. Responding to the severity of the situation, the Home Ministry has launched a high-level investigation, appointing the chief of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to lead the probe.
The focus is on understanding the lapses that allowed such an intrusion and ensuring the necessary measures are in place to prevent future incidents.
