Guwahati, Dec 15: The Assam Police is in close coordination with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and other central investigating agencies in connection with the three explosions in Upper Assam in less than a month, the latest being a ‘grenade blast’ outside a military station in Jorhat on Thursday evening.

Militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) had claimed responsibility for the grenade blast.

This is the third explosion since November 22 with two other explosions reported from Tinsukia and Sivasagar.

Warning the perpetrators of the blasts, Assam DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh on Friday said that “the strongest possible action would be taken against the offenders who will be identified…Already, we are in touch with NIA and other central agencies. A NIA team will soon be coming to the state to probe the incidents.”

“People who love Assam should not be hurting the state and its people this way. The people of Assam should question them as to why they are carrying out these attacks, hurling grenades here and there,” Singh said.

“If they have a problem with me, I live in Kahilipara and my office is in Ulubari…so they can come and target me,” the DGP said.

The top police official further said that if the state’s police forces were diverted to anti-insurgency operations, tackling other crimes would take a hit and people would suffer.

“We have adhered to a zero-tolerance policy against violence apart from other crimes, as a result of which the crime rate in Assam has dipped. Of late, we have taken action against fake call centres and made several arrests in the APSC scam,” the DGP said.

“The state’s conviction rate has also increased to 16 percent last month from five percent once upon a time. So somehow, I am unable to understand this concept (of attacks) and why this is happening now,” he said.
