SHILLONG, Dec 19: As anticipated, the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA), consisting of the UDP and HSPDP, formally announced Robertjune Kharjahrin, the former president of HYC, as its common candidate for the Shillong parliamentary seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls scheduled for next year.
Following a meeting of the RDA on Tuesday, its chairman Metbah Lyngdoh told reporters that the common candidate will run under the UDP banner.
He added that since Kharjahrin was the alliance’s unanimous choice, they did not talk about any other names.
He claims that this only illustrates the cooperation between the two alliance partners and shows the mindset of the alliance how it is going to face the upcoming elections.
According to the RDA chairman, there will be mutual understanding between the two parties during the next district council elections in KHADC and JHADC. He declared, “We have not yet talked about seat sharing for the district council elections.”
Endorsing Kharjahrin’s candidature, HSPDP president and RDA secretary, KP Pangniang stated that since each party had its own distinct symbol, the two parties had discussed the common symbol.
“But we are of the view that it will be better to select the symbol of the UDP since it will be a long process to get a common symbol. As the alliance we did not want to delay anymore since we want to start our campaign at the earliest,” Pangniang added.
