SHILLONG, Dec 20: The High Court of Meghalaya has directed the Additional Advocate General of Meghalaya to instruct the traffic enforcement agencies to curb the menace of reckless and negligent riding of two-wheelers at a high speed within East Khasi Hills District.
The court’s directions came during a hearing on a PIL filed by Romilton Pahsyntiew against the failure on the part of the law enforcement agencies to enforce stringent provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 with regard to reckless and negligent riding of two-wheelers at a high speed in the district.
The petitioner’s counsel, N Syngkon drew the attention of the court to information received through an RTI application which shows that there have been 21 fatalities and 28 injuries between July 30, 2022 and July 23, 2023 due to reckless riding of two-wheelers.
The counsel also urged the court to issue appropriate directions to the traffic enforcement agencies, through Additional Advocate-General ND Chullai, to strictly enforce the Motor Vehicles Act and to install proper check at strategic points to stem this menace.
