SHILLONG, Dec 2: The beginning of the year 2024 was not entirely tranquil and amicable. A 50-year-old man lost his life after he was assaulted by two persons in a drunken stupor at Khatar Shnong village in East Khasi Hills. The duo has been forwarded to court.
This was informed by the Superintendent of Police (City), Vivek Syiem.
On Monday evening, which was the first day of the year, information was received from Sirdar Mawmang village, Khatar Shnong, that one Moris Khongshei (50) of the same village was assaulted at 3 am by two persons in a drunken stupor.
The SP (City) said that the victim later succumbed to his injuries.
Immediately on receiving the information, the Officer in-Charge of Sohra PS, S Lhuid, and staff proceeded to take necessary action.
During the course of investigation, the two male persons involved were arrested and forwarded to court.
Although several incidents of road mishap among a few other unfortunate incidents (See P-3) in select parts of the state marked the beginning of 2024, the situation in the city was by and large peaceful.
Several private parties and hotels had organised musical programmes to welcome the New Year, while Police Bazar drew a large number of people from within and outside the state.
There were no reports of any untoward incident from any part of the city.
SP (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, K. Prasad, said that only one case of drunken driving was reported from the city on New Year’s Eve.
“There were no drunken brawls and everything was peaceful,” he added.
The recent notification of the police to act strictly against drunken driving led to good awareness among the people to celebrate the New Year in the best spirit, Prasad remarked.
