Shillong, Jan 18: East Khasi Hills (EKH) district continued its remarkable performance in Taekwondo at the Montfort Centre on Thursday, securing all three gold medals in the junior girls’ Kyorugi categories.
In the first event, junior girls’ Kyorugi under 46 kg, Ibapyhnun Kharmyndai of EKH defeated Joynilla Ch Sangma of South West Garo Hills (SWGH), with Nokgrikchi G Momin and Jheanchim B Marak sharing the bronze. The second event, junior girls’ Kyorugi under 42 kg, saw Dayalanki Challan of EKH clinch the gold medal by defeating Sritee Kumari of West Jaintia Hills.
In the junior boy’s Kyorugi under 45 kg, Ravi Kumar Rai of EKH emerged victorious, securing the gold by defeating Areyo M Sangma of East Garo Hills. The competition showcased the prowess of East Khasi Hills in the Taekwondo arena.
Football
In a spectacular display of dominance, the East Khasi Hills (EKH) Girls’ Football team secured an impressive 5-0 victory against South West Khasi Hills (SWKH) Girls’ team in the U18 Football semifinal during the 5th Meghalaya Games at the P.A. Sangma Stadium in Tura on Thursday.
From the kickoff, East Khasi Hills took control of the match, with midfielder Melaribha scoring the opening goal just 9 minutes into the game. The team continued their ball possession, adding a second goal in the 28th minute from I. Khongsit, maintaining a 2-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, East Khasi Hills maintained their grip on the game, and in the 54th minute, striker I Khongthaw secured the third goal. Despite South West Khasi Hills having chances, they struggled to match the superior pace of East Khasi Hills. Khongthaw added two more goals to her name in the 61st and 68th minutes, securing a hat-trick just two minutes before the end of the match.
With this convincing victory in the semifinal, East Khasi Hills is now set to face Ri Bhoi in the final for the gold medal and championship of the division. Meanwhile, Eastern West Khasi Hills will compete against South West Khasi Hills for the Bronze Medal in the Meghalaya Games 2024 on Friday.
Table Tennis
The 5th Edition of the Meghalaya Games commenced its fourth day with highly anticipated Table Tennis matches at Tura Indoor Stadium, Hawakhana. The event featured 31 players from four districts, with East Khasi Hills (EKH) leading with 12 players, followed by West Garo Hills (WGH) with 8 players, Ri Bhoi with 4 players, and South Garo Hills (SGH) with 3 players.
Adding flair to the game were three veteran players, Gilbert Sohtun (66), Pynlang Sohtun (56), and Paokho Tinhang Haokip (55), all representing East Khasi Hills. Sandeep Kumar (Men) from East Khasi Hills, a national player, was highlighted as the Player-to-Watch.
The fixture included Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. The first-round matches took place on Thursday, with all final rounds scheduled for Friday.
Athletics
West Jaintia Hills stole the spotlight in athletics on the third day of the 5th Meghalaya Games at the newly laid Pa Togan Nengminza athletic stadium, winning four of the eight events.
In the Men’s 5000 meters race, Dabit Dkhar of West Jaintia Hills secured gold, clocking in at 15:53:9. In the women’s 5000 meters race, Lyntijingkyrmen K Jahrin of South West Khasi Hills won gold.
The day witnessed exceptional performances in the women’s long jump event, the 400 meters for men, the Women’s 400-meter race, and the men’s long jump, with athletes from different districts showcasing their prowess.
In the relay races, West Jaintia Hills secured gold in the men’s 4×100 relay, while East Khasi Hills triumphed in the women’s 4×100 meter relay.
Gymnastics
The 5th Meghalaya Games showcased a spectacular domination of gymnastics by East Khasi Hills, captivating audiences with remarkable performances in Vaulting Table, Floor Exercise, and Balancing Beam at Don Bosco Junior College in Tura.
In the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics categories, East Khasi Hills swept all medals in every division, from Senior to Sub-Junior. In the Men’s Open Category Artistic Gymnastics, participants demonstrated incredible strength, agility, and precision in their routines.
The title of the All-around Champion among men was claimed by Mebantei Lyngdoh Marshillong, while Wandalang Bernadette Malngiang secured the All-around Champion title in the Senior Category.
The performances showcased individual talents and the growing enthusiasm for gymnastics within East Khasi Hills.
Wushu
Tura, Meghalaya – The Wushu event at Don Bosco School witnessed multiple districts sharing the spoils, although East Khasi Hills (EKH) continued to lead in numbers. Nine gold medals in various Wushu categories were up for grabs.
In the sub-junior boys (45 kg) category, Eastern West Khasi Hills (EWKH) secured gold, while in the sub-junior boys (35 kg) category, EKH claimed victory. The junior boys (45 kg) category saw South Garo Hills (SGH) winning gold.
For the senior men (45 kg) category, EWKH emerged victorious, while in the junior boys (45 kg) category, North Garo Hills (NGH) secured gold. The junior girls (45 kg) category was won by East Jaintia Hills (EJH).
In the junior boys (48 kg) category, West Khasi Hills (WKH) secured gold, and in the junior girls (48 kg) and junior girls (52 kg) categories, EKH emerged victorious.
The Wushu event showcased the diverse talents and competitive spirit among districts in Meghalaya.
