Shillong, Jan 28: KHADC CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem declared on Sunday that the council would follow the High Court of Meghalaya’s decision concerning the writ petition that questioned the delimitation committee, which was established with the Governor’s approval.
According to Syiem, the delimitation exercise had not been halted by the High Court, which heard the case on December 28 of last year.
He went on to clarify that the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules of 1951 make no mention of the delimitation committee.
“As a result, we lack the authority to form the delimitation committee,” Syiem declared.
He stated that the writ petition is probably going to be listed again once the High Court resumes its sitting, having received a copy of the petition filed by Dominic Warjri from the Assistant Registrar of the court.
He claimed that they have already requested the council’s standing attorney, VGK Kynta to represent the KHADC in the High Court.
Warjri had submitted a petition contesting the KHADC’s “illegal action” in creating the delimitation committee.
