SHILLONG, Feb 5: Meghalaya Police has cautioned the public against scamsters posing as agents of courier services such as FedEx, who are duping targeted citizens by telling them over the phone that consignments which have arrived in their name contain contraband.
Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said that additionally, the scamsters also involve others using the names of central law enforcement agencies such as CBI, NCB, etc.
They give the pretext that the target’s credentials are being used for money laundering and they need to transfer large amounts to an account which they claim to be for RBI clearance.
In order to scare their targets, they also present the looming threat of arrest in most cases.
In certain other cases, the potential victims are asked to register online complaints through screen mirroring applications, which may be used in turn to dupe unsuspecting targets.
Police have clearly warned people against downloading such apps when unsolicited callers tell them to, and advised them to verify if a call is received for an unordered item.
“Any incident of such nature may be reported to the respective police station for ascertaining the veracity of it and for further police action. The matter can also be reported to Cybercrime (1930) and Police Control Room, Shillong (2215427 and 6009196479,” the police said in a statement.
