Guwahati, Feb 8: Assam Police have sought from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) copies of the final reports of its investigation into the death of a lady sub-inspector of the state police force, which were submitted to a court in Nagaon district on Wednesday.

“Reference (to the) investigation of various criminal cases, including those related to death of SI Junmoni Rabha, Assam Police has written to CBI to provide copy of the final form reports submitted after investigation in the competent court for analysis and further action,” Assam director-general of police Gyanendra Pratap stated on the micro-blogging platform, X, on Thursday.

Sources said the CBI team submitted the final reports regarding three separate cases registered in Nagaon. The findings of these reports have not been publicly disclosed.

Junmoni was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside her vehicle on national highway-37 at Jakhalabandha in Nagaon district on May 16, 2023.

Multiple cases related to the sub-inspector’s death were registered, of which three were lodged by Junmoni’s mother Sumitra Rabha, one by a woman named Hasina Begum against a few police officers, and one suo motu case was registered at Jakhalabandha police station in Nagaon.

Another case was registered based on the complaint of one Amina Khatun against Junmoni at Lakhimpur Sadar police station in Lakhimpur.

It may be recalled that the DGP had on May 20 last year, officially recommended the transfer of investigation of four cases registered in police stations in Nagaon and Lakhimpur districts of the state to the CBI.

The decision was taken amid demands from various sections of society and after reviewing every aspect of the case and holding discussions with the criminal investigation department (CID) of Assam Police and senior police officers.

The CBI subsequently took over the case from the CID of Assam Police in June 2023 to ensure neutrality in the probe, responding to public demand and the sensitive nature of the case involving a police officer.
