SHILLONG, Feb 7: KHADC Deputy CEM, Pynshngain N Syiem said that the present EC had to constitute the delimitation committee (DC) since they cannot ignore the representation from the various stakeholders.
Talking to The Shillong Times, Syiem said that they had to write to the Governor to constitute the delimitation panel after receiving representation from the various villages, individuals, political leaders and other stakeholders. “It is our duty to process this matter since it came to us when we took over the EC,” Syiem said.
He noted that there was no representation from any of the stakeholders during the previous EC’s tenure.
On the proximity between polls and call to carry out the delimitation exercise, he said, “I know questions are raised. We wanted the exercise to be completed before the elections.”
It may be recalled that a writ petition was filed by Dominic Warjri questioning the constitution of the delimitation committee.
On this, Syeim said, “The high court granted the standing counsel an additional three weeks to file the case’s maintainability at the most recent hearing, which took place on February 2.”
The court is set to hear the matter on February 27.
