SHILLONG, March 5: The public transport system in Meghalaya’s capital city is far from being satisfactory as the majority of the population in the city is still dependent on the iconic black-and-yellow taxis to travel around the city.
They are overcharging and overloading, many reported.
However, the government even in an era where many cities boast of sophisticated and advanced transport systems has not even mooted the idea of introducing Ola and Uber in Shillong.
Lately, the new e-bike taxis have become quite popular in Shillong following the introduction of Rapido a few years ago.
It may be mentioned that for more than a year, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has been announcing the operation of electric buses but till now these buses are yet to be seen on the streets of Shillong.
Interestingly, in Guwahati, hundreds of electric AC buses are operating under the Smart City project.
In the past too similar government buses under the nomenclature of SPTS buses and SSPS have been operating but the majority of these buses have been condemned and people are dependent on local taxis.
