TURA, Mar 13: The Karukol Regional unit of the GSU has requested the South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner to withhold necessary permits for operation of the proposed stone quarry at Nokatgre, in order to safeguard the Re’nang Dare waterfall.
In a petition to the DC, the GSU argued that such an activity will not only affect Re’nang Dare but other popular spots like Jadisil Fish Sanctuary, Aginma Wari, Jawa Wari, Na’kama Cave, Te’tengkol, Wari Chora etc.
It claimed that while the concerned nokma had given only a portion of land from his own a’king for the quarry, additional plantation lands, belonging to five households, were also included in the quarry site following a mapping of the area.
Pointing out that the rural economy of the region would also collapse as many betel nut plantations have been included in the mapping, the union urged the DC to withhold the permit for operation of quarry. In case the same had already been granted, the GSU has appealed to the DC to nip the activity in the bud.
