SHILLONG, March 20: Suspended Meghalaya police officer GK Iangrai has submitted a petition before the High Court of Meghalaya seeking his reinstatement. The matter pertains to the perceived illegal procurement of vehicles by some officials of the Police department.
Iangrai’s counsel P Yobin submitted before the court that he was incarcerated and came out of bail.
“More than half a dozen charges have been framed against Iangrai and he has also been placed under suspension in the year 2022. More than a year has gone by, but there was not much progress in the inquiry,” the defence counsel said, pleading that Iangrai should be reinstated in service and it is open to the Department to proceed with the same in accordance with the law.
The court observed that when the matter was taken up for hearing earlier this month, it was represented by the counsel appearing for the state respondents that the inquiry officer had fixed the date for inspecting documents on March 11, 2024, while the inquiry is scheduled to be held on March 26.
The court ruled that the submission made by Iangrai (through his counsel) cannot be considered in this writ petition filed by way of PIL and if any challenge is made against the suspension order, depending upon the materials available before the court, an order may be passed as to whether suspension should be continued or he may be posted in a non-sensitive post after revoking the suspension.
The court will hear the matter again on April 5.
