SHILLONG, March 22: Reeling under the torrent of attacks by other political parties, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) has argued that such a resort by its political rivals goes on to show that they are scared and intimidated by the growing strength and overwhelming support received by the party.
“We are strong and ahead of them; that is the reason why they are confused, scared and intimidated by the strength and the kind of overwhelming support that we receive from the people. We believe in truth and in the end truth will prevail,” said VPP chief and Nongkrem MLA, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit.
On the narrative that the VPP is acting holier-than-thou and accusing others of misdeeds, he said, “It happens when you try to be good. Sometimes you will experience people who will try to say this is acting like an angel. We will not fall into the trap, we will try to do good.”
The VPP chief also ridiculed the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief and Shillong MP Vincent Pala for jumping the guns without understanding the statement made by him properly.
It may be mentioned that Pala had accused Basaiawmoit of maligning the image of the church by engaging in loose talks and misleading the people.
“Pala has not been able to read my statement correctly. It is so sad that being an MP for the third time he could not read my statement properly,” he said.
“I did not allege, I just brought to the notice of the people about the degradation in the field of politics when we talk about bringing clean politics,” he clarified.
Contending that it was not an allegation but expression of concern and that Pala should have listened to his speech carefully before jumping the guns against him, Basaiawmoit said, “I did not expect that it would come from a person of the stature of a third-time MP. I did not expect him to act like those people who do not have the capacity to analyse and to read the statement properly”.
It may be mentioned that Pala had asked Basaiawmoit to apologise to the Church for allegedly maligning their image with their loose talk to mislead the people.
“The VPP has damaged the reputation of the Church not only in Meghalaya but the entire country. They should stop misleading the people of the state with their loose talk,” the Shillong MP had said on Thursday.
He had also accused the VPP of copying and pasting the BJP ideology of divide and rule.
“The VPP is systematically trying to weaken the Church, society, and the political parties and to give the impression it is the only party that is correct and works for the people,” the MPCC chief had said.
