SHILLONG, March 25: Amidst Holi celebrations at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), two people sustained minor injuries as a scuffle broke out between members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) on Monday afternoon.
Police said that the argument occurred between the groups during the Holi celebration in the university campus here.
Police have not arrested anyone as of now. Two separate FIRs have been lodged in the case.
One of the injured persons reportedly was NEHUSU vice president Easterson Sohtun. He was later taken to Civil Hospital for first aid.
In the FIR filed with Mawkynroh Outpost, the NEHU vice president alleged that three individuals viz., Kamlesh Singh, Amit Tripathi, and Anubhav Pandey, had assaulted him.
The FIR claimed that around two hundred RSS and ABVP members entered the campus with the intention of celebrating Holi.
Sohtun claimed that they were stopped by NEHUSU members, citing university regulations prohibiting celebrations and political activities on the campus. The ABVP Shillong unit, on the other hand, has objected to the allegations levelled by NEHUSU against the ABVP.
According to the ABVP’s statement, a get-together was organised by the World Organisation of Students and Youth (WOSY) to celebrate Holi on the campus of NEHU.
“The members of ABVP were also invited to attend this Holi celebration. The WOSY had organised the event to have a cultural exchange among the students and some international students to be felicitated during the programme,” he said.
The ABVP Shillong unit alleged that some members of NEHUSU intentionally tried to disturb the peace and tranquility of the programme by hitting some common students of the University.
It has sought a proper investigation into the matter, while assuring cooperation with the police during the course of inquiry.
