MAWKYRWAT, April 7: Congress leader and Mawhati MLA, Charles Marngar has called upon the people to vote for Congress to protect minorities in India and end the ‘oppressive’ BJP regime.
Speaking at the public meeting of the Congress here on Saturday as part of the election campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha election, Marngar said, “During the Congress’s rule, there was no incident of oppressing minorities, especially Christians in India, because the Congress believes in secularism as mentioned in the Constitution. But in the last 10 years, things have changed and Christians have been targeted in different parts of the country. I am afraid that the sound of the bells every Sunday which calls us to go to Church, one day we will not hear them anymore”.
Marngar declared that this election is about ‘protection’, particularly for Christian minorities.
“As Christian minorities, we need protection. In Delhi, you have Congress on one side and the BJP on the other. It is only the Congress that can fight the BJP in Delhi,” Marngar said.
He claimed that the Congress, during its rule, had worked for the greater good of the people in Meghalaya.
Training guns on the MDA government in the state, the Congress MLA slammed the government over illegal coal mining and transportation.
“Coal mining has been banned, but in Ri-Bhoi, thousands of trucks carrying coal pass through every day. The money from this illegal coal mining does not go to the government, but it goes to the pockets of some individuals within the government,” Marngar said.
Others who spoke at the campaign include Nongstoin MLA Gabriel Wahlang, State Congress vice president Khrang Lyngkhoi, and president of the South West Khasi Hills District Congress Committee, Kynpham Kharlyngdoh, among others.
