SHILLONG, April 14: Director General of Police (DGP) LR Bishnoi said the police have intensified the drive to seize liquor and realise fines from the violators of traffic rules.
He told The Shillong Times they are also ensuring that weapons are deposited.
He said the traffic police realised fines of Rs 30,000 from drivers who were found to be under the influence of alcohol. He said six vehicles, which were equipped with modified silencers and causing a nuisance, were also seized.
“We will continue with these measures in the coming days,” the DGP said.
The police have beefed up security in the state following the killings of three non-tribals and in preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Earlier, the DGP said eight companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) have reached the state. Seven companies have been deployed in Shillong and one in Sohra.
Bishnoi said the CAPF companies began route marches in localities from Friday to build confidence among the public.
Asked if more forces will be sought, he said the state already has 40 CAPF companies.
The DGP said mobile police squads will patrol the narrow lanes where heavy vehicles cannot enter. A total of 82 motorcycles will be engaged for this purpose
“We are keeping a watch on social media. We are urging people not to post provocative or hate speeches and maintain harmony and peace. The problem is with social media where people are posting provocative statements. We are closely monitoring it,” he had stated.
