SHILLONG, April 24: Meghalaya saw its first successful conception through a specialised form of In Vitro fertilisation (IVF), known as Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) by Bethany Hospital , Shillong, earlier this week.
ICSI is an Assisted Reproductive Technology procedure where a single healthy active sperm is directly injected into an egg to achieve fertilisation, making it a revolutionary development for men with low sperm count and compromised motility.
The breakthrough procedure was performed for a couple who had been struggling with infertility for a decade.
Despite encountering a minor uterine defect, the team at Bethany Hospital utilised advanced techniques to overcome these challenges, following which the correction of the uterine defect through hysteroscopy, the frozen embryo transfer was carried out after thawing.
The healthy baby was delivered earlier this week, making it a landmark achievement for reproductive health in Meghalaya. This is Meghalaya’s first successful ICSI and first successful frozen embryo transfer conception.
The success of this endeavour can be credited to the collaborative efforts of Bethany Hospital’s dedicated team of professionals, including Dr Batiston D Waanbah (Infertility Specialist), Dr Wanda B Makdoh (Anaesthesiologist), K Aniesha Blah, and Stephen V (Embryologists), along with nursing and support staff.
Antenatal care and delivery were performed by Dr Clarinda E Khongwar, Dr Rida P Nongrum, and Dr Rebecca Fanai, with expert newborn care provided by Dr Uma Ghosh, ensuring the well-being of both the mother and the newborn.
