Two more Assam residents held in SWGH gang-rape case

TURA, April 28: South West Garo Hills Police have arrested two more accused in connection with the assault and gang-rape of two minor girls during the Chenga Benga Mela on April 17.
So far, nine persons have been arrested in connection with the case. Police said more arrests are likely to be made in the coming days.
All the arrested persons are residents of Teporpara village in Assam, located near the crime scene. The arrests were made with the assistance of South Salmara District Police in Assam. Along with the arrests of the nine persons, seven mobile phones have also been seized, police said.
The ongoing investigation also revealed that the perpetrators also snatched a mobile phone from one of the victims while threatening to extort money from another. Two cognizable cases have been registered with regard to the matter and investigation is on.
“We appeal to the people to let us know if they have any information with regard to the case. Their identities will be kept secret,” South West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Vikash Kumar said, while assuring that more arrests are in the offing.
