MAWKYRWAT, May 6: As part of the endeavour to strengthen the District Council Courts across all districts, the Deputy Chief Executive Member (Dy CEM) of KHADC, also in charge of Law department, Pynshngain N Syiem, on Monday, inspected the District Council Court here at the KHADC Mawkyrwat Branch.
Speaking to media persons after meeting the Council officials, Syiem said that the creation of the District Council Court in Mawkyrwat has contributed in easing the problems faced by the people of the district with regard to dealing with cases.
Syiem said that the main objective of this inspection was to strengthen the District Council Court in Mawkyrwat.
The Dy CEM has directed that rooms on the second floor of the building may be used as the Chamber for Magistrate, staff and lawyers.
Syiem also pointed out that the notification issued by the state government pertaining to the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) being allowed to be taken up in the district courts, has badly affected the District Council Courts. The KHADC will take up this matter with the state government to ensure that cases, whether criminal or civil, between tribals should be dealt by the District Council Courts, according to the provision of the Sixth Schedule, he added.
“Regarding the order of the High Court allowing district courts of the state government to hear cases concerning two tribals, the Council will look into and if needed, we can also file an appeal in the Supreme Court,” Syiem said.
The Dy CEM added, “These are the reasons behind the KHADC strengthening the District Council Courts in every district. In fact, not only the District Council Courts at the district level, but even the village courts. Earlier, we used to have village courts, conforming to the provisions of the Sixth Schedule, but as of now, our focus is strengthening of District Council Courts in every district”.
