SHILLONG, May 9: The High Court of Meghalaya on Thursday acknowledged the tribulations of the people living in rural areas as far as cremating their loved ones is concerned.
When informed that there is no facility for cremation of dead bodies in rural areas, as a result of which the villagers are forced to take the dead bodies beyond 20 km for the purpose of cremation which is very monotonous, Additional Advocate General, K Khan, during the hearing of a PIL, submitted across the bar that suitable areas may be identified by the persons concerned.
The grievance was submitted before the court by Dr N Mozika, Amicus Curiae with Advocate LMD Marak, appearing for the petitioner (Re-Seng Khasi Hima Crematorium).
The Amicus Curiae was also suggested to give the particulars of areas for construction or crematorium, so that the state will ensure that such areas are earmarked for the said purpose.
During the hearing, Mozika added that he may be permitted to identify areas that really require a place for cremation.
According to Khan, a dead person is to be equally respected by giving a warm farewell or a decent cremation.
He also assured that the state will extend all facilities, provided the areas identified are feasible for cremation.
The court will again take up the matter on June 10, 2024.
