Jacarandas in blues as Cherry Blossom takes the crown

The cherry blossoms have sure won the competition of the fame game, as not only the locals, but people far and wide flock to the city to see these once a year, sporadic blooms. But how can one not overlook the utterly under-appreciated Jacarandas, whose vibrant purple hues paint the town purple, every year, as a welcome song of spring.
The humble Jacarandas continue their annual tradition, their fragrance as elusive as a fleeting dream., as April wanes and May creeps in.
Sure, they don’t do much besides looking pretty, but are the cherry blossoms also not the same? Or do we validate it because we have a festival named after it?
While the Cherry Blossoms hog all the glory, the locals should spare a thought for their purple counterparts and the shy Peach trees, which blossom, but hardly turn heads, or camera phones.
The only thing common between these three aesthetically pleasing trees is that they are as sporadic as mobile network connections in the countryside.

When the heavens poured down on Shillong
around 3 pm on Friday as the day turned into
night, not all of us had the entitlement of admiring
nature’s terrifying yet fascinating side. Workers,
as seen in the picture, had to remove water
which inundated the premises of a few shops at
Police Bazar after the sudden downpour. (ST)
