Restriction on activities in Umiew river

SHILLONG, May 15: The East Khasi Hills District Magistrate has indefinitely prohibited car-washing and use of streams or wells for disposal of polluting matter etc., along the catchment/tributaries of Umiew river and all its tributaries, streams, etc.
According to a statement here, the order was issued in the wake of reports about pollution of rivers stemming from large-scale car washing in river Umiew at Umiew Maw-U-Sam, Smit area.
“And such act of polluting the river, streams, if allowed to continue, will disturb the river ecosystem and the environment thereby making it unfit for human consumption affecting aquatic life and impacting the food chain, causing health risk for those using the water,” the statement said.
