SHILLONG, May 17: The state government on Friday said a new reverse osmosis (RO) system for dialysis treatment has been sanctioned for Shillong Civil Hospital.
A reverse osmosis (RO) system is the primary method for purifying water for dialysis treatment as it ensures that patients receive safe and clean water.
The government also informed that efforts are on to ensure that dialysis centres are set up in the district hospitals to avoid additional pressure on Shillong Civil Hospital.
In addition, the government would also consider bringing home dialysis for chronic patients under the ambit of the Megha Health Insurance Scheme.
Meanwhile, talking about the questionable quality of water supplied by the PHE which rendered the RO machine non-functional for almost a week, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “The dialysis equipment are in good order. The three dialysis machines that were provided by the North Eastern Council are in good condition. We also have three more provided under the CSR project. We have a total of six dialysis machines in Shillong Civil Hospital.”
Stating that the dialysis centre is running 24/7 and is facing tremendous strain, she said that the most critical deficiency in the centre for dialysis is the shortage of space that thwarts any expansion plans.
“We hope to ensure that dialysis centres are given at least to the district hospitals to avoid this pressure on the civil hospital. We have realized that it has become a chronic requirement in Meghalaya and we are on the job,” she added.
