TURA, May 20: The All Meghalaya Minorities Labour Union has called for a halt to a road project in West Garo Hills, alleging irregularities in the same and expressing concern over public safety.
The project in question is the ongoing construction, including metalling and blacktopping, of the road from Batabari to Shidakandi via Tarapara, Goalgaon, and extension of Goalgaon to Peradanga in West Garo Hills.
In a complaint to West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner on Monday, the organisation said, “Going by the present condition of constructed culvert of the road, there are some dissimilarities which we have observed through our RTI copy of estimate. The newly constructed culvert has already developed cracks and the metalling and width of the road is not appropriate as per estimate near Tarapara.”
According to the organisation, some parts of the previous road from AMPT Road Shidakandi to Goalgaon had also been constructed without measuring the flood level, which takes place annually.
Pointing out that allowing the continuation of the road project would later pose safety hazards to the people, the group demanded a magisterial and technical investigation, to ensure that its construction takes place in a proper manner.
