SHILLONG, May 30: The 2nd year M.Sc. Nursing students of the College of Nursing, NEIGRIHMS, demonstrated their fire safety expertise by conducting a successful fire and safety mock drill themed “Escape to Safety” at the Multipurpose Hall today.
The event began with a welcome address by Ms. Ohamdikahun Khongiong, Organizing Secretary, followed by insightful speeches on fire safety. Prof. Nochovono Tase, Principal and Professor, College of Nursing, NEIGRIHMS, and Dr Saurabh Singh, Assistant Professor, Hospital Administration and Deputy Medical Superintendent, NEIGRIHMS, highlighted the importance of fire safety and the prevalence of fire incidents in India.
The M.Sc. Nursing students presented on several key topics related to fire safety, including an overview of fire characteristics, types of fires, proper use of fire extinguishers, and the significance of mock drills.
Rosylyne Shangpliang provided a detailed explanation of the “Fire and Safety Mock Drill” scenario, setting the stage for the practical exercise.
The mock drill itself tested the students’ fire safety training and response skills, followed by a debriefing session led by BK Barman, Fire Guard at NEIGRIHMS. His feedback and insights were invaluable, offering the students an opportunity to learn and improve from the simulation.
Moutushi Kakoti concluded the programme with a vote of thanks.
A commemorative photo session and light refreshments wrapped up the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Director of NEIGRIHMS, Prof Nalin Mehta, emphasised the importance of such drills. “These are crucial survival skills that should be imparted to all personnel through regular mock drills, especially in educational institutions. Fire preparedness saves valuable lives, and its relevance is immense in hospitals as it is difficult to mobilise sick patients. Proper training can help overcome this disadvantage considerably,” Mehta said.
