SHILLONG, June 10: The Chief Executive Officer of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) has issued an alert regarding a scam targeting local street vendors.
According to a statement here, unknown individuals were reportedly collecting money from street vendors using fake receipts that falsely bore the SMB’s name.
It was informed that the money was being collected with a “fake receipt bearing the name of the SMB from street vendors on the pretext of registration of vendors, which the Town Vending Committee (TVC) through this office is currently conducting as per provisions of the Meghalaya Street Vending (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Scheme, 2023.”
Informing that the Town Vending Committee does not charge any registration fees, it was informed that a formal complaint has also been lodged by the Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers & Street Vendors Association concerning the fraudulent activity.
Meanwhile, in response to the scam, the CEO has filed an FIR with the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, urging legal action against the perpetrators.
