TURA, June 14: The three-day Garo Hills visit of the Meghalaya State Education Commission (MSEC) concluded on Friday, as the panel returned to the state capital with suggestions and recommendations galore to revamp the education sector in the region.
Resubelpara in North Garo Hills was the last stop in the education commission’s itinerary.
On the last day, a meeting was held at the Conference Hall of the North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner during which a threadbare assessment of the educational scenario of the district took place.
MSEC chairperson SM Sungoh, Member Secretary of Education Department Ambrose Ch Marak, former UPSC chairman David R Syiemlieh, and other officials met the principals of various secondary and higher secondary schools of the district as well as the principal of Mendipathar College, which is also the lone college in the district.
During the meeting, the heads of various educational institutions suggested that concerned authority properly inspect the institutes and subsequently address their impending issues, some of which include inefficient infrastructure, unfilled staff, insufficient fund sanction, etc.
During the discussions, most of the school principals stressed the dire need to upgrade the infrastructure in schools.
On the other hand, North Garo Hills Additional Deputy Commissioner Jude RT Sangma opined that the poor academic performances of the students could be attributed to long winter holidays coupled with festivities which, according to him, make the students disinterested towards studies. Sangma then suggested that the school academic calendar be altered in such a way that performance of students is not affected.
Meanwhile, the MSEC members pressed before the educational heads to focus more on teacher improvisation, conduct orientation programmes for teachers, depute one teacher from each school for counseling programme, and diagnose learning problems of students.
