SHILLONG, June 17: A plantation drive was on Monday carried out at Umtung village, Bhoirymbong, Ri-Bhoi, in line with the efforts of state and central governments to increase green cover and combat global warming.
According to a statement here, the programme, which was organised by the Manipuri Elders’ Consortium Shillong (MECS) in collaboration with Ka Synjuk Ki Hima Arliang-Wah Umiam Mawphlang Welfare Society’s Ri-Bhoi Community REDD+ Project and the Village Dorbar, highlighted the similarities between traditional forest conservation practices of the Khasi-Jaintia’s ‘Law Kyntang’/‘Law Lyngdoh’ and the Meitei’s ‘Umang Lai.’
Some of the attendees of the programme included Project Director of the REDD+ Project Tambor Lyngdoh; Adviser to the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Meghalaya, YKB Singh; Adviser to MECS, Indra Khomdram; and Rangbah Shnong of Umtung, Banribha Syiemsad.
