NONGPOH, July 4: Nongpoh, with 613 registered taxpayers, generated Rs. 36 crore as GST revenue last year whilst Byrnihat, with 209 registered taxpayers, contributed Rs. 27 crore to the same.
This was informed by Commissioner H. Soikhanthang of the CGST Shillong Commissionerate during an outreach programme ‘Sashakth Vyapar – Samagr Vikas,’ organised by the CGST Shillong Commissionerate, to mark the 7th anniversary of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Nongpoh.
During the programme, Soikhanthang highlighted the critical role of the GST system for local businesses and praised the significant contributions of the Nongpoh and Byrnihat ranges to the Shillong Commissionerate’s overall revenue.
He then urged businesses to register for GST, stressing the advantages such as streamlined online processes from registration to return filing, the ability to collect tax from customers and claim input tax credits, which, he said, can help manage funds more effectively.
Soikhanthang also emphasised how GST compliance aids businesses in transitioning from the unorganised to the organised sector, ensuring proper bookkeeping and accessing fair funding channels. He mentioned the GST composition scheme as a beneficial option for small businesses to reduce their tax and compliance burdens.
Others who were part of the programme were Assistant Commissioner, CGST Shillong Division, Praveen Kr. Agrawal; Additional Commissioner, CGST Shillong Commissionerate, Pauzakham Ngaihte; and Superintendent, State GST, S. Myrthong.
