4 killed in clash over sharing of irrigation water
Chandigarh, July 8: Four people were killed after two groups of villagers in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district attacked and opened fire at each other apparently over an old rivalry, police said on Monday. The incident took place at Lighanwala Chowk in Sri Hargobindpur in Batala on Sunday night. There were 13 people in total in the two groups and all of them hail from village Vithwan here. Two persons from each group died in the firing, said Batala Senior Superintendent of Police Ashwini Gotyal. (PTI)

Minor throws infant into well
Yadgir, July 8: In a shocking case, a minor threw a three-month-old girl into a well after the baby’s uncle refused her love proposal in Karnataka’s Yadgir district, said officials on Monday. The deceased baby, identified as Meenakshi, was the daughter of Nagesh and Chittemma, a couple residing in Ambedkar Layout in Yadgir city. According to police, the accused minor girl lived in a neighbouring house and had fallen in love with the baby’s paternal uncle, Yallappa. The accused confessed to committing the crime because she was in love with the baby’s uncle and he had rejected her. (IANS)

Bhagavad Gita courses may be introduced in DU
New Delhi, July 8: Introduction to Vedic Literature, Upanishad Parichaya, Dharma and Religion are among the options that the Delhi University’s Centre for Hindu Studies plans to offer to its students as minor electives. In a bid to expand its course curriculum and provide a wide range of choices to students, the department has proposed to introduce six new elective papers for students, who wish to specialise in Hindu Studies and await their approval from the Academic Council of the university. A meeting of the Academic Council of Delhi University is slated for July 12. These additions are proposed based on the recommendations of the Governing Body of the Centre for Hindu Studies. In addition to the UGC approved syllabus, the Centre for Hindu Studies now plans to introduce more choices for students by offering papers on various aspects of Hinduism, said an official. The students, who don’t wish to study Commerce, Political Science or Computer Science as minor electives along with the major subject can avail for these choices. (PTI)
