SHILLONG, July 18: Close on the heels of continued backlash, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM), Pynshngain N Syiem, on Thursday, announced that the delimitation committee’s recommendation to attach Mawlai Mawroh to Jaiaw constituency aims to ensure uniformity in the number of electorates across the Council’s 29 constituencies. This statement was made during a meeting with a delegation from the Dorbar Shnong Mawlai Mawroh, attended by Mawlai local MDC, Teibor Pathaw.
Currently, the Jaiaw constituency has approximately 17,000 to 18,000 voters. Syiem emphasised the importance of continuity from Nongmali, which is part of the Jaiaw constituency, to Mawlai Mawroh. “We will discuss the concern raised by the Dorbar Shnong of Mawlai Mawroh in the Select Committee,” stated Syiem, who also chairs the Select Committee examining the delimitation committee’s report.
The Dorbar Shnong of Mawlai Mawroh submitted a representation expressing strong opposition to the proposed realignment with the Jaiaw constituency. Additionally, the Select Committee will review the representation submitted by the Mawlai Town Dorbar (MTD).
Syiem clarified that the Select Committee will make the final decision on the panel’s recommendations. “We will convene a special session of the Council once the Select Committee completes the process,” he added.
