SHILLONG, July 31: It is football time in Meghalaya, and students of schools within the Shillong Municipal Board area have been given a holiday on August 2 for the opening ceremony of the high-profile Durand Cup at JN Stadium.
In pursuance of a letter received from the Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, Meghalaya, regarding the opening ceremony of the Durand Cup 2024 at J.N. Stadium Complex, Polo Ground, and in anticipation of extremely heavy traffic congestion, all schools within the Shillong Municipal Area have been asked to remain closed on August 2 to avoid any hardships for the students.
This order was issued by the Director of School Education and Literacy, Swapnil Tambe.
Whilst students are excited to get a holiday on the pretext of the football tournament, many parents are unhappy with the idea of declaring a holiday for the sake of an inaugural event.
Some said that in Meghalaya, football seems to come first before education for the state government.
