TURA, July 31: The AHAM, Central Executive Body (CEB) in Tura, has sought the intervention of Union Minister for Rural Development and Agriculture, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, into the alleged delay in MGNREGA wage payment in Garo Hills region.
In its complaint to the union minister, the organisation informed that while the MGNREGA has been a lifesaver for many rural villagers, daily-wage payment under the scheme has been pending for many months in Garo Hills with some C&RD blocks even failing to release the payments since 2023.
According to the organisation, workers, particularly women and the marginalised communities, are forced to wait for months and years to receive their wages, causing severe financial strain and deprivation.
“This not only undermines the livelihoods of rural workers but also erodes their trust and confidence in the government’s commitment to their welfare and rural upliftment,” it said.
The organisation, while urging the minister to look into the matter and ensure timely payment of wages, also requested an increase in guarantee days from 100 to 150/200 days in the scheduled areas, implementation of compulsory labour budget and faster paper work for release of wages, provision of unemployment allowance and direction to the BDO to allow social audit by local bodies of every project and asset.
