SHILLONG, Aug 19: Lafarge Umiam Mining Pvt Ltd (LUMPL) has received a five-star rating from the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) for the sixth consecutive year. The LUMPL is so far the only company in Northeast which has received five star rating.
A total of 68 five-star rated mining companies of India were recognised by the Ministry of Coal and Mines, at an award ceremony recently. On behalf of LUMPL, Shishupal Singh, senior manager, LUMPL, received the award from Union Minister G Kishan Reddy and Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey.
A ‘Star Rating’ is given to the mining leases for the efforts and initiatives taken for implementation of the Sustainable Development Framework (SDF) which includes managing impacts at the mine level, final/progressive mine closure and landscape restoration, addressing social impacts and assurance and reporting.
Five-star rating, on the other hand, is awarded to a mine where the percentage of total marks obtained in all the modules is equal to or above 90%. It may be mentioned that this year, a total of 1,256 mines in India filed the online self- assessments.
