MAWKYRWAT, Aug 22: The one-day office picketing called by three circles of the Khasi Student’s Union (KSU) in South West Khasi Hills — KSU Lawbah Border Area Circle, KSU Balat Border Area Circle and KSU Sawsymper Circle — demanding upgrade of the Mawsynram C&RD Block into a Civil Sub-division passed off peacefully. All government offices remained closed on Thursday.
General secretary of the KSU Sawsymper Circle, Macdonald Marbaniang said that during the inspection by the members of the Union, it was found that all government offices under Mawsynram C&RD Block, East Khasi Hills, including the Block Development Office (BDO), PHE department, Forest department, PWD (Roads), ICDs, FEDCO and Post Office were closed since the start of the office hours.
The KSU maintained that Mawsynram C&RD Block, which is one of the oldest C&RD Block in the state as it has been in existence for more than 62 years deserved to be upgraded into a Civil Subdivision. However, the KSU expressed regrets that this issue which the people of Mawsynram area have been waited for decades, has become just a political issue taken advantages by politicians and political parties from elections to elections.
With all the offices closed, the Union expressed gratitude to the locals, especially the staff and officers of all departments for extending their support to the office-picketing, while calling upon the government to heed the demand for Mawsynram block upgrade.
He also called upon the people and leaders of the area to attend a meeting scheduled for August 26 at 11:30 am at the Dorbar Hall of Mawsynram Dongrum to add more vigour to their demand.
