Shillong, August 28: The State government is examining the suggestions to set up a new district within the East Khasi Hills district with its headquarters based at Sohra.

“Be it the creation of civil sub-division or even district, the government is thinking and the main intention is to take administration closer to the people.,” said Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong during the question hour on Wednesday.

TMC leader Charles Pyngrope had suggested the State government to consider coming up with a new district within the East Khasi Hills district to take administration closer to the people.

He cited that the EKH district is the biggest in the entire State and therefore there is a need for the creation of a new district within it.

Earlier, UDP MLA from Mawsynram constituency, Olan Singh Suin had asked the government whether the long pending demand for the creation of a new civil sub-division at Mawsynram Community and Rural development block will be considered.

In his reply, the Deputy Chief Minister said, “We are examining not just a civil sub division and Community Rural Development Block but also a district”.
