NONGPOH, Sep 5: A family of three — a couple and their child — narrowly escaped disaster when a sudden landslide struck their home in Shangbangla village, located along National Highway 6, late Wednesday night.
According to sources, the landslide occurred around 8 pm following over three hours of continuous heavy rainfall, which weakened the soil and caused the ground to give way.
The landslide damaged parts of the family’s home and adjoining shop.
Teiborlang Wahlang, the head of the affected family, shared that he, his wife, and their child managed to escape unscathed after they quickly evacuated their house just before the landslide hit. “We barely managed to get out in time before the earth gave way,” Wahlang recounted.
While the family members escaped unharmed, Wahlang and his wife reported that their possessions inside the house, including fruits, vegetables, and various goods from their shop, were completely lost. Some of the stock, particularly the fruits, was washed away by the rainwater.
Headman of Shangbangla Bishos Lawriniang expressed grief over the incident, acknowledging the heavy losses faced by the family. He offered words of gratitude, noting that despite the extensive damage, no lives were lost. “We are thankful to God for sparing them from harm, though their home and shop have been severely damaged,” Lawriniang said.
Lawriniang further called upon local representatives and government authorities to step in and provide necessary aid to the family. He stressed the importance of supporting them in rebuilding their home and resuming their lives after the tragic event.
