Shillong, Sep 8: The KSU on Sunday sent a “strong message” to the government that it would “impose” the ILP on its own since the central and the state governments were not taking any initiative in getting the system implemented in Meghalaya.
“We are now in 2024. But sadly, the Centre is still studying the resolution on the ILP passed in 2019,” KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar said while adding that the students’ body will take the support of the local indigenous people and continue its drive against illegal immigrants in various localities and villages.
The union also castigated the state government for not implementing Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016 that aims to deal with the issue of influx and illegal immigrants.
“The state government has put the MRSSA 2016 in the cupboard. We want an answer from the state government as to when it is going to implement this important act,” Marngar said.
Recalling that the 60 MLAs had supported a resolution in 2019 to implement ILP in the state, he questioned why the central government was sitting on the resolution.
“We want to send a strong message to the government that we are going to implement the ILP on our own,” he warned.
Marngar said they have waited for over 50 years but the government has failed to implement an effective law to deal with influx and illegal immigrants.
It may be recalled that the KSU had erected an ILP check gate at Pahammawlein village along National Highway 6 in Ri-Bhoi district in July to prevent the entry of suspected illegal migrants into the state.
