MAWKYRWAT, Sep 9: Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar announced the release of various development schemes and projects for the year 2023-24, worth Rs 2.58 crores. The schemes, launched under the Special Rural Works Programme (SRWP), Intensive Arts and Culture Development Program (IACDP), Development of Traditional Folk Music (DTFM), and the Intensive Sports and Youth Development Programme (ISYDP), aim to benefit numerous communities in the South West Khasi Hills.
During a meeting held at his office on Monday, Tongkhar unveiled a list of public schemes and beneficiaries to promote transparency. The schemes include projects for constructing public toilets, playgrounds, washing ponds, parking spaces, fencing, additional school buildings, footpaths, and ponds.
For private beneficiaries, 702 farmers will each receive Rs 15,000 for agricultural development, while 200 households will be provided with three bundles of CGI sheets each. Overall, the number of beneficiaries of the MLA scheme, including individuals, schools, villages, and churches, totals 1,000 for the year.
Speaking at the event, Tongkhar emphasised that while the schemes are relatively small, they aim to uplift farmers and those from underprivileged backgrounds. He also addressed the issue of public skepticism regarding government projects, urging people to remain positive and not fall prey to the belief that all government schemes are tainted by corruption.
The event was attended by dignitaries such as Kynsai Deingdoh and Khlainbor Malngiang from the office of the Block Development Officer, Chairman of MPDA, SK Budnah, Secretary of MPDA J Nongsiej, and others.
